darwin darwin Earthwatch

This website shows the activities of two integrated projects: a) Establishing biodiversity monitoring network to inform Estonian coastal wetland management, funded by Darwin Initiative (2004-2007); b) Baltic Island wetland and wildlife, supported by the Earthwatch Institute (from 2002).

Both projects are co-ordinated by University of Brighton in the UK and NGO Läänerannik in Estonia. The Darwin project aims to establish a network of stakeholders and sites for coastal wetland monitoring to inform management plans and environmental policy for biodiversity in west Estonia, and generally to increase the capacity for wetland monitoring in Estonia. The Earthwatch project aims to assess the sensitivity of coastal wetlands in west Estonia to abandonment, and to monitor any recovery following restoration. The project is carried out with the help of volunteers, and so far there have been about hundred enthusiasts from all over the world who have helped to discover Estonian wetlands.

You will find information about the projects from this website. Feel free to discover coastal wetlands as a volunteer or as a researcher!
